So these forums are based on a many-year-old version of MVCForum. And while it mostly works pretty well there are some annoying bugs in it and things that don't work as well as they should.

Unfortunately I can't perform a straight upgrade of the forums, the databases are too different for a migration to work. So it'd be an all-or-nothing approach.

This would sadly mean that everyone would have to re-register. The plan would be to keep the old forums around on a different subdomain so users could continue to access them for a while until everything was sorted.

However it would mean a slightly better design, better spam filtering and better search.

So what do you guys think?

I think it'd be great, since MVCForum is... well, getting old. But what would you consider switching over to? I'm a big fan of IP.Board products, however, I'm aware they aren't free so they're definitely not the be-all end-all forum software of choice.

My second choices would be bbPress, which runs off a WordPress-based site installation, or Discourse, which is free to host on your own server. Last resort options would be phpBB, and then vBulletin, but I'm not too fond of these two since they seem to get exploited more often than others...

So which forum software were you thinking of upgrading to?

A newer version of the same board. Not switching platform, but because of the modifications ive made I can't upgrade to a newer version of MVCForum

Quite old topic, but why not keep a read-only version of the old forums if switching over? there's questions already answered here, so a wipe would be a setback imo; it kinda pains me when sites switch over and wipes the database, so anything that google comes upon with is not there anymore; or when migration happens, and old forum gets moved to a new location, but google still points to a old location;

The old forums will be kept around as read-only for some time. I'll also be looking through the logs to find which threads are being accessed the most often and add their summarised contents to the wiki to make them searchable.
